Graydon Carter, the editor of Vanity Fair and an owner of the Waverly Inn along with partners, Hotelier Jeff Klein and Jeremy King of The Wolseley in London are the new owners of the Monkey Bar.

A Brief History of the Monkey Bar and Hotel Elysée:
Manhattan's Hotel Elysée has been home to the Monkey Bar NYC since it opened in the depths of the Great Depression, The Monkey Bar New York became known as “the place to go” especially for those who enjoyed off-color jokes and double-entendre songs spun by such performers as Johnny Payne (1934-1944) and Mel Martin (1945-1983). Starting out as just another dimly lit hotel piano bar with mirrored paneling, patrons started to mimic one another (“monkey see, monkey do”). The tiny room was formally named The monkey Bar in the early 1950’s when the mirrors came down and were replaced by wrap-around hand-painted murals of monkeys by caricaturist Charlie Wala. The old murals depicted monkeys with decidedly human features performing stunts such as elephant riding, monkeys crouching under a Christmas tree, monkeys mixing up banana daiquiris for tough looking monkey-like customers, etc. In successive years, other artists have added to the tableau, keeping the Monkey Bar New York as polished as it always was in days gone by.

Guests of the Hotel Elysée in New York are welcome to enjoy many of Monkey Bar's signature selections which are available on the Hotel's in-room dining menu. Monkey Bar is open for lunch Monday - Friday 12pm - 3pm and for dinner 5:30pm - 12am. The Bar at Monkey Bar is open Monday - Friday 12pm - 12am. Saturday's the restaurant and bar are open from 5:30pm - 11pm.

The Club Room:
We would be delighted to welcome you to the Hotel Elysée’s Club Room where guests enjoy complimentary breakfast; Monday - Friday 7 am - 10:30 am; Saturday & Sunday 7 am - 11 am assorted croissants, mini-muffins, scones, Danishes and pastries, bagels with cream cheese, peanut butter, preserves and butter, fresh whole fruit and fruit salad, fresh orange, apple and cranberry juice, assorted cereals, oatmeal and yogurts, hard-boiled eggs, coffee and assorted teas served in the Club Room.

We also offer breakfast delivery if you wish to enjoy your morning in the comfort of your own room for an additional $5.00.

	On weekday evenings, guests of the New York Hotel Elysée are invited to enjoy a complimentary wine and cheese reception in our Club Room from 5-8pm. Complimentary afternoon tea, coffee, cookies and whole fruits are available to our guests in the Club Room throughout day. A computer station is available in the Club Room and high speed wifi is available throughout the hotel.
